Calicut University Syndicate Gives Nod For 35 Self-Financing Colleges

News Information

The University of Calicut has decided to sanction 35 new self-financing colleges, including 12 professional colleges, in the five Malabar districts under it.A meeting of the varsity syndicate held on Monday also decided to sanction a marginal increase in the number of seats in existing affiliated colleges, creating 7,000 new seats. The varsity sanctioned a 20% increase in seats during the 2014-15 academic year. The recommendations will be forwarded to the state government for final approval. The syndicate also decided, in principle, to increase examination fees from the next academic year. The finance officer presented a report stating that while the university incurred an expenditure of Rs 36 crore for the conduct of examinations last academic year, it received only Rs 25 crore as fees from students, resulting in a deficit of Rs 11 crore. The meeting decided to publish a white paper on the matter and hold further discussions with student representatives before effecting the hike. The university also decided to do away with the false numbering of answer sheets during evaluation, amid opposition by a section of the syndicate which said that the decision would affect the confidentiality of the examination process. The syndicate has decided to start three new teaching departments for sociology, Urdu and law on the campus. The meeting witnessed heated arguments between Congress and IUML syndicate members over the proposal of shifting administrative control over department heads from the vice-chancellor to the pro-vice chancellor. The proposal was opposed by IUML-affiliated syndicate members saying that it was against the varsity statutes. The meeting has decided to seek the approval of the chancellor before arriving at a final decision on the matter. The syndicate also decided to seek permission from the state government to send varsity officials to Qatar and Kuwait on business visas for examination duties in the overseas centres following difficulties encountered in obtaining visas for official visit to the two countries.
