Delhi University Won"T Answer Queries On Four-Year Undergraduate Programme

News Information

-  An altercation was inevitable. Most students who attended the first Open Day at South Campus, Delhi University, were not there for information on admission procedure. They wanted details of the four-year undergraduate programme. University officials, on the other hand, wanted no discussion on the topic. As more and more uncomfortable questions started coming, DU's response became a take-it-or-leave-it one. "Delhi has five more universities", students and parents were told.
About 1,000 DU-hopefuls attended the orientation and this was a group that had done its homework. Being already fairly informed about the admission procedure, many left wondering what the point of the exercise was. "Don't bother about the second session. They don't tell you anything you don't know already," says Shubhangana Vishwanathan, "We already know about admissions. We are here to find out about the changes in the system. I've come all the way from Dwarka but they are not even ready to answer our queries. What is the point?" When deputy dean, student's welfare (south campus), Dinesh Varshney responded to a question on the evaluation system for the foundation courses introduced this year with "we are here to discuss admissions and not the four year course", an angry murmur of protest went through the crowd. One parent shouted out, "It's just a simple question. Why are you ducking?" joint dean Sangit Kumar Ragi did answer but only after warning parents, saying, "We are not here to discuss the merits or demerits of the system. I'll explain the evaluation process but for others, questions will not be entertained at all."
"They told us only how to fill the forms," says Anoop Kumar, a resident of Moti Bagh, whose daughter will be seeking admission this year. "We got no clarification on the four-year programme itself. I asked an official outside about FYUP and he replied it's DU's internal matter and if we have a problem, my daughter can go to another university." But Kumar's not one to take that lying down. "I told him it's a government institution and we have a right to know." Meanwhile, a student asking if she'd be allowed to study a Discipline II course in a college other than where she's studying Discipline I got a categorical "no".
