First Four-Year Undergraduate Programme Batch Wary Of "Reform"

News Information

The question mark on the future of Delhi University's four-year undergraduate programme has left students enrolled in the academic year 2013-14 in a quandary. With the Union human resource ministry hinting at its exit, many are even counting its pluses and feel it need not be scrapped altogether.Students are also wary of any 'reform' that leaves them in the four-year mode. If changes are to be introduced, they want these to be for everyone. Else, as Shaily Jha, a geography student at Miranda House points out, "two batches will graduate together."What must go though seem to be the foundation courses. These have received criticism all around."We are overburdened by foundation courses and applied language courses and are unable to focus on major subjects," says Priyanka Verma who studies English at Kamala Nehru College.Yasha Shrivastava, food technology student at Lady Irwin College, argues that "with the introduction of FYUP, BSc courses were converted to BTech-considered equivalent to degrees offered by engineering institutes. A rollback would mean these going back to ordinary BSc status."The FYUP promise that you'll be allowed to pursue a masters degree in a subject you studied as a 'minor' or 'discipline course II" is also attractive. Akshith Kapoor, studying economics at Hindu College, says, "If one does a minor in economics while majoring in commerce, then an option of an MA in economics still remains under FYUP."Despite VC Dinesh Singh's attempt on Monday to convince education secretary Ashok Thakur about its merits and long term implications, central government sources have said the programme may ultimately be rolled back. The old three-year system could be brought back, ministry sources said
