Fyup New Guidelines Create Imbalance In Thdepartments Across Campus

News Information

The Delhi Teachers forecasts that many problems are likely to arise after the newly formed committee on Discipline Courses II set guidelines to fix the issues of allotment of colleges to the applicants. It is being assumed argued that the students after getting full liberty to pick course and subjects may either lead to expansion of few college departments and shrinking of some others at the same time, if not extinction. On the other hand, if they go for putting a limit on the number of seats it may lead to the problem of reservation. In majority of DU colleges, the departments are facing major imbalances in the number of students applying for each course, since the students in the first year are free to choose their choice of DCIIs-'minor' subjects introduced as part of the four year undergraduate programme. For instance, at Miranda House, none of the students have applied for Bengali, while only two have preferred Sanskrit and five for botany as DCIIThe first option chosen by many students are for political science, economics and sociology as first option. The takers are 183, 152 and 149 respectively. If a pattern is to be observed then it brings that in most colleges of the Delhi University, the Modern Indian Language departments are suffering the most.
Upon this Abha Dev Habib, physics teacher at MH and elected member of DU's executive council.said that the UGC and MHRD have not announced any extra teaching posts much required by DU now to meet the resources for expanded departments. She added that the number of seats for DC II in a particular subject might raise questions on reservation. She argued that how will marks for a student enrolled for Physics DC-I be compared with those of a student enrolled for English DC-I course vis-a-vis their choice of Economics as DC-II? Also she questioned that will the one who enrols for six papers of DC-II be given priority?
