In A First, Iiit-Allahabad To Hold Students" Body Elections On Feb 11

For the first time in the history of Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT-A), a students' body would be elected by the students themselves through voting on February 11. The students' body, to be christened 'Students' Gymkhana', will start functioning from the day of elections itself.According to a notification issued by Students' Gymkhana on Thursday, IIIT-A's acting director Prof GC Nandi has granted permission for holding the said elections. The nominations would start from February 6 (evening) and end on February 7 (night). Withdrawal of candidature can be done till February 8 till 7.00 am and the names of shortlisted candidates, after scrutiny, will be announced the same day at 1.00 pm. The qualifying speech will take place on February 10 at 6.00 pm onwards. Voting will take place on February 11 from 6.00 pm onwards at CC3 while results will be declared immediately after the voting process.Meanwhile, the model code of conduct for the students came into force with immediate effect. There shall be a proportional representation of students in the Gymkhana according to the year of study in a programme and the number of the students in that year. All bonafide students of a particular batch (per programme per year) shall be eligible to vote for their corresponding candidates.Every bonafide student can contest the election subject to the additional eligibility conditions like the candidate must have a minimum CGPI of 7.50 in the immediately preceding semester. This, however, is not applicable for PhD candidates. There must be no undergoing disciplinary proceedings at the institute level against the candidate.Regarding the election campaign, the notification says it should be aimed at a free, fair and open discussion about who is a better representative or what is a good policy. The election campaign shall be confined to the online mode only.The voters can cast their vote online through the official election online portal. The votes shall be counted and results declared forthwith. If any candidate feels that the election in his area has not been held properly, or if he has any objection against the result, he can file an election petition. The election commissioner has the right to review an election petition.
Model Code of Conduct for candidates also says that no candidate shall partake in any activity which may create differences or tension among students.
