Marking System In Tamil Nadu May Work Against Law Aspirants From Cbse

News Information

The introduction of law as an elective in senior secondary school may give CBSE students an edge over their state counterparts when it comes to higher education. But, aspiring lawyers fear getting into a law school will remain a dream for many CBSE students. The Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University and the seven law colleges in the state under it don't take into consideration the nationwide practice of normalisation of marks for CBSE students. Agencies handling admission to other professional courses in the state, including engineering and medicine, normalise marks secured by students of schools affiliated to the ICSE and CBSE. For years, CBSE students have felt they are at a disadvantage when compared to students of state board schools because of the lenient evaluation. Normalisation of marks has kept the peace. But, when that benefit is removed, CBSE students feel beaten . "I have found law interesting and thought the competition won't be as high as in other professional courses. But, I found the university won't accept percentile marks," said Preethi, who completed Class 12 .
Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University vice-chancellor V Vijayakumar said normalization had not been done. "I plan to write to the state government, seeking approval. If we get a positive response before the merit list is put up we can take the percentile mark, but nothing can be done outside government regulations." Some private institutions said normalization of marks won't give the desired results when it comes to law admissions. SASTRA university dean S Vaidhyasubramaniam said, "Students taking various subjects in Class 12 apply for law. Normalisation is usually done to remove disparities across boards, but it will not help when you consider it across subjects."
