Poor Pupil-Teacher Ratio Plagues Urdu Schools

More than 80,000 students of Urdu medium schools, enrolled in 2012-14, in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are victims of a poor pupil-teacher ratio (PTR). Statistics show that of the 2,682 Urdu medium schools in both states, more than 700 primary schools have a PTR of one teacher instructing more than 30 students, a violation of rules prescribed by Right to Education (RTE) Act.Officials of the school education department pointed out that the PTR, as prescribed by the RTE Act, for primary schools is one teacher for every 30 students and for upper primary schools is one teacher for every 35 students.
Further, schools with student strength between 150 and 200 are to have a headmaster with five teachers.

An analysis of District Information System for Education (DISE) data by the Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) revealed that with 97 schools with a PTR of more than 30, Hyderabad district stood at the top followed by Nizamabad district with 83, Kurnool district with 73, Adilabad district with 72 and Ranga Reddy with 64.
While there are 3,110 Urdu medium schools in the 23 districts of both states, DISE data was available for only 2,682.
Of these, a staggering 720 schools have only one teacher for more than 30 students. Incidentally, the MPPS Urdu Medium School, Utnoor in Adilabad district stands as an example of the government's lack of interest in strengthening Urdu mediums schools, as a staggering PTR of one teacher for 175 students was noted here. Further, the Government Primary School Achireddy Nagar in Bahadurpura mandal in Hyderabad district stood with the highest PTR of one teacher for 74 students.
"DISE information has stated that there is a requirement of 1,161 secondary grade teachers across districts and 765 school assistants. There is a serious shortfall. We demand that the governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana fill the vacant posts as soon as possible," said SIO secretary Farhan Sumbul.
